Michael SailstorferServices: Breaking glass with sound waves; simulation and performance
Michael Sailstorfer, internationally renowned for his unique sculptures, wanted to show and record on video how a room can expand by means of sound waves only; a window of a room should be shattered as a result.
He asked
to help realize his idea.
To find the best fixation method for maximum deflection as well as the resonance frequency of the window, a number of test measurements and FEM-analysis were performed. The final test setup and optimum test room dimensions were determined as a result of this investigation.
On January 27th, 2008, four Sublow-speakers by
L-Acoustics were installed in the test room specifically designed for this purpose. Mounted in this test room, the window could be easily destroyed utilizing a 55Hz sinus wave.
Several windows were destroyed by this method and each breakage was recorded on video for further use by the artist who will use this material for his work.
More of his appealing work can be found at the site of gallery owner
Johann Koenig. The site is definetely worth a visit!
