The Strandbar is a beautiful and extremely popular outdoor bar, located in the Monbijoupark directly adjacent to the Spree River. In years before the new system, the necessary background music came to be a prolem for the nearby living tenants (150m distance). At that time it seemed impossible to both protect the neighbours and play sufficiently loud background music for the bar at the same time.
was asked to develop a technical solution in cooperation with local authorities which would fulfill both the Bar's and the neighbours needs.
In this case, the solution was fairly simple: a 6m-long (20ft) line-array was installed as such that the concerned neighbours are located 90° out of the main lobe where the array has its maximum redution. The side-lobe reduction is high enough that the system is practically inaudible for the neighbours.
In fact, the levels now possible in the guest area while maintaining the allowed levels at the neighbour's house are now higher than actually necessary for running the bar.
The uneven frequency response of the ordinary sound columns was straightened with parametric filters. As a welcome side-effect of the system, the guest array now shows a much more constanct sound pressure level distribution. It should be mentioned that the entire system was built at very low cost.
Since the installation of the new system, music is not a disturbing factor for the neighbours any more; at the same time the guests of the bar can now enjoy music all night long.
